Recruiters, Take Your Own Advice
We spend our days advising candidates on interviewing, preparation, and resume writing - but when it comes to our own job search, we often ignore that advice. A well-prepared resume and matching LinkedIn profile are essential to landing your next role. Here are some practical tips:
LinkedIn Matters
Your profile is the first thing clients check. Use a professional photo (not a beach shot or food selfie) and ensure your employment dates match your resume. Consistency counts.
Keep It Simple
Avoid fancy fonts, boxes, and emojis. Stick to one font (Arial 10.5 or 11), bold only headings, and use bullet points for clarity. Layout should be clean and consistent.
Structure Your Resume
-
Top Section: Name, languages, skills, education.
-
Work Experience: Start with your most recent role. List company (left) and dates (right), then job title. Use bullet points to highlight achievements - business development, placements, new clients - not just duties.
-
Keep it positive and factual. Avoid “I” statements and soft skills fluff. Billing numbers matter and will be checked.
Length & Relevance
If it’s over four pages, cut it down. Tailor your resume to the role - internal recruitment vs. retained search requires different emphasis. Use keywords from the job description where possible.
Show Personality
Include hobbies or interests that demonstrate success outside work - but keep it balanced.
Bottom line: Take the time to craft a strong resume and align your LinkedIn profile. It’s the first step to getting interviews.
